Sports Direct has announced it will offer parents of newborn babies across the Rebel County the chance to see their baby’s name featured on Cork’s very own walk of fame this summer ahead of Cork GAA’s championship openers, showcasing a new chapter in the #BornToPlay campaign.
The names will feature on the ‘The Steps to Greatness’ at Pairc Uí Chaoimh and the deadline for registration is next Tuesday, June 29th at 6 PM.
The campaign is aimed at strengthening the bond between Cork’s current crop of players and the rebels of the future with this unique initiative. In addition, Sports Direct will gift Cork GAA jerseys to the lucky babies selected, paving the way for their pathway to the Cork GAA panel of 2040. The jersey, launched in February of this year, celebrates the three core pillars of clubs, schools and county that together form the foundation of Cork GAA.
Cork footballer, Brian Hurley and hurler, Shane Kingston were on hand today to help launch the initiative, and they hope that the #BornToPlay campaign will galvanise support of both teams as they look to make their mark on the 2021 GAA All-Ireland Senior Championships.
To celebrate the start of the championship season, Sports Direct is giving fans who purchase the new Cork jersey in-store €10 off their next purchase and they have also launched a new video featuring some of the heroes of today – who are hoping to inspire the heroes of tomorrow – which can be viewed below
“Cork’s supporters are some of the most passionate in this country, and for many, that passion has been fuelled since before they were able to hold a ball,” said Sports Direct Managing Director Leonard Brassel.
“We have loved every minute of our journey with Cork to date, and are excited to mark the beginning of the Championship season for Cork with the #BornToPlay initiative, celebrating both the greatness of today’s players and the stars of tomorrow.”
“My dream from a very young age was to play for Cork and I’m truly honoured that I am able to pull on the red jersey and represent my family, friends, community and club,” said Shane Kingston.
“I am thrilled to help Sports Direct launch the #BornToPlay campaign today and I’m calling on GAA fans and new parents across the county to get involved and register over the coming days to be part of something truly special at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.”
Earlier this year, Sports Direct announced a five-year sponsorship deal with Cork GAA. Since coming on board as the principal partner of Cork GAA, Sports Direct has supported not just the men’s senior football and hurling teams, but also the Minor and Under 20 teams in both codes. With the latest announcement of their #BornToPlay campaign, Sports Direct aims to ensure that the future of Cork GAA is in good hands.
