Moo Crew BoxingThe National Dairy Council is undertaking an extensive programme of education on the benefits of milk to sports participants.
Darren O’Neill, who captained the Irish boxing team at the London 2012 Olympic Games, is the ambassador for a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of dairy products among primary school children.

Primary schools nationwide have received information packs and lesson plans about a new ‘Moo Crew‘ programme for 3rd to 6th class children this week.
“Moo Crew helps us to learn about a healthy diet and the right balance of foods, the importance of “mooving” with fun exercises and to learn about where our Irish dairy comes from – from farm to fridge.”
The National Dairy Council programme involves mascot Milly the cow sharing information and recipes as well as a competition during National Dairy Week. The overall winning class will win a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Tablet PC for each child in the class.
A new website has also been launched to support the initiative, with information, activities and lesson plans.
The Council is also on the road with a programme of coach education seminars involving food nutritionists and using specific case studies to highlight nutrition and hydration issues that are specific to each sport.
In recent weeks seminars have taken place through the IABA using Darren O’Neill as an example and through Basketball Ireland where 6’10” Jason Killeen of UL Eagles was the star in highlighting the importance of drinking straight after exercise when the body was most receptive.
‘Milk it for all it’s worth’ is the overall header for the campaign.  It has also run a special competition for schools, over the past two years, to win a full days training session with Rob Kearney, Bryan Cullen and Easkey Britton.
Energy drinks like Lucozade Sport and Powerade may be more obvious sporting sponsors, but with funding from Government and the EU it is good to see the Dairy Council in the mix as well, as an education resource and commercial supporter of sport.
