The Irish Podcast Awards shortlist of nominees has been published with sporting themes featuring across a number of categories.

In the Best Sports Podcast, it will be a battle among the heavyweights versus the underdogs.

Of the five nominees, three are produced under the banner of mainstream broadcasters with two coming from less vaunted media heritage.

RTÉ’s Rugby Podcast, along with the BBC’s GAA Social offering and OTB Sports The Football Pod have two of the big three sports covered while football is the subject choice for the other two with Al Foran’s Goalmouth Football Forum and The Other 3 Amigo’s.

The latter is the work of three friends riffing on the fortunes and travails of Cork City, playing this season in the second tier of the domestic game after years of challenging at the top of the SSE Airtricity Premier Division.

Sport also pops up in the documentary and marketing categories.

Tainted Gold, The Michelle Smith Story was produced by the Indo Daily team and tracks the story of the swimmer from the Atlanta Olympic Games of 1996.

The Domestic Game is the work of three individuals covering the less commented upon world of the teams and tournaments that make up the sport of American Football in Ireland.

With UCD having won a first-ever Shamrock Bowl yesterday, beating the nine-time champion Dublin Rebels at the Kingspan Stadium, there will be some fresh voices for them to hear from.

Watch out next week when the third in our Sport for Business Podcast, and the first in our Business of Rugby series supported by Bank of Ireland will drop for your listening pleasure.

The winners of the Irish POdcast Awards will be revealed at an event in Dublin on Friday, September 16th.
