Leona Maguire surged through the field on the final day of the AIG Irish Women’s Open on Sunday and finished with her best ever result in a major in a tie for fourth.

This was the ninth consecutive Major in which she has made it to the weekend and the third time she has finished inside the Top Ten.

The tournament looked as though it was heading to an inevitable conclusion with South African Ashleigh Buhai having taken a five-shot lead into the closing round and still three ahead standing on the 15th tee.

A triple bogey on that hole though meant she would have to do it the hard way winning a play-off with In Gee Chun on the fourth playoff hole.

Maguire was already on her way to the ferry for a trip back to the island of Ireland where she will tee it up in the ISPS Handa International at Galgorm Castle this coming weekend in the company of her manager Niall Horan and a host of the leading Male and Female players, as well as a tournament for Golfers with a Disability on their Tour.

The Pr-Am on Wednesday will also feature Robbie Keane, actor James Nesbitt, former Ireland rugby player Stephen Ferris, retired Irish rugby player Anna Caplice, Olympian Greg O’Shea, Blizzards singer Bressie, comedian Rory O’Connor (Rory’s Stories), former Cork GAA footballer Valerie Mulcahy, Ireland international hockey player Nicci Daly, former football manager and player Liam Beckett, retired Ulster rugby player Darren Cave, former Irish Cricketer Kyle McCallan and Northern Irish Football coach Tommy Wright. They will also be joined by UTV Sports Correspondent Ruth Gorman, Cool FM’s Pete Snodden and BBC Sports Presenter Stephen Watson.
