The CCAO Third Level Camogie Championship Finals will take place at UCD over this weekend with the previously unnamed Division 5 Cup officially named the “Ashling Murphy Cup”.

Pictured above is former Wexford camogie player and Electric Ireland Ashbourne Cup winner with UCD, Mags D’Arcy as she looks ahead to the weekend.

It is just over a year since Ashling Murphy went out for a run and was cruelly murdered.

The young teacher played camogie not just for her local club Kilcormac/Killoughey but represented Mary Immaculate College at collegiate level as well.

Ashling’s passing shook the country to its core, especially women and girls who have often found themselves “just going on a run”.

The decision was approved by her family and the Cup has been donated by Mary Immaculate College.

“Ashling’s tragic death was deeply felt by the camogie community, most especially by her teammates, club, county and Mary Immaculate College where she had played,” said Camogie Association President Hilda Breslin.

“Our thoughts will always be with Ashling’s family, friends, club and wider community.”

“Since Ashling’s death, her family with great courage and dignity have sought to raise both the issue of violence towards women but also celebrate the wonderful life of Ashling.”

“Ashling’s accomplishments, her generosity of spirit and her love of Irish culture touched so many, the naming of the CCAO cup in her honour is a fitting tribute. It will also continue to highlight the responsibility of all of us within society to ensure a safe environment for women.”

The semi-finals for the Division One Electric Ireland Ashbourne Cup take place today at 2 PM and 4 PM with two from TU Dublin, SETU Waterford, UCC and DCU making it through to Saturday’s Final.

Ulster University Magee play Atlantic Technological University Sligo in the Ashling Murphy Cup Final this evening at 6 PM.
