Bord Gáis Energy has extended its sponsorship of the GAA Hurling U21 Championship by three more years. This is the fifth year of the relationship and it was confirmed at Croke Park on Wednesday that TG4 would broadcast ten live matches, as well as an end of season review and awards programme in October.
The activation of the sponsorship this year will focus on a theme of Breaking Through with the revival of a micro website under that name and a variety of social media channels being used to keep fans up to date.
The company has named a group of nine player ambassadors who will maintain video blogs including behind the scenes access from training grounds and dressing rooms.
“Bord Gáis Energy have helped us to bring this competition to another level for the last number of years,” said GAA President Liam O’Neill. “Their enthusiastic engagement has shone through in their support of the championship, support that I am delighted to say will continue for another three years.
“One main focus this year is to bring our customers closer to the action,” said Bord Gáis Energy Head of Marketing Nicky Doran. “We will be offering the chance to present Man of the Match awards on live TV, to wave their counties onto the pitch at a provincial final and to carry the iconic Cross of Cashel trophy onto the pitch on All-Ireland final day in front of 20,000 plus fans.”
“This is the fifth year of Bord Gáis Energy’s involvement with the U-21 Hurling Championship and it’s our intention once again to bring the action to fans in our own unique way as well as rewarding Bord Gáis Energy customers,” added Ger Cunningham a selector on the Cork team and Sports Ambassador with the company.
The commitment of the company to at least three more years is important at a time when a significant portion of the company budget has gone towards naming rights at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre and following the withdrawal from a long time association with Ladies Gaelic Football.
