Camogie and Hurling seek closer links
Five year deal stronger with both
Changes to Championship structure

This year’s Championship structure has been altered by splitting teams in the Senior competition into two groups and introducing a quarter final stage.
A total of 24 counties will compete across senior, intermediate and Junior championships, all of which will be supported by Liberty Insurance in this first year of a five year deal.
It is hoped that there will be a greater number of games televised over the course of the coming years and that more games will be played on double bills with hurling matches to increase exposure of the two sports alongside each other.
It is also possible that Liberty will use the GAA partnership in order to add to its own bottom line, and deliver a valuable service through providing insurance to grounds around the country as it recently announced with regard to English cricket.
The company may also seek to expand the Irish reach of its US based ‘Responsible Moments in Sport’ initiative, linking into the strength of the GAA at juvenile level.
Wexford are bidding for a fourth All Ireland title in a row but have suffered defeats to Dublin and Kilkenny in this year’s National League campaign and it could be the most open Championship in some time.
“The joint partnership with the GAA All Ireland Hurling Championship is an exciting new departure for the Camogie Association and a fantastic opportunity for our sport. It symbolises the strength of both Camogie and the GAA working together and the natural synergy between both games.”
“We are particularly pleased that Liberty Insurance, an international company and a leader in its field, has chosen to come on board and partner with our organisation over the next five years. We are excited about the possibilities that this presents and the opportunities to bring camogie to an even greater audience with the strong support of Liberty Insurance.”
The sentiment of being stronger by acting together was echoed by Pat O’Brien, CEO of Liberty Insurance who added “It was very important for us that this partnership took in the full GAA family of both hurling and camogie.
“Indeed it is a family where brothers, sisters, cousins and club mates are all united by their shared love of our oldest games. We look forward to working together with the Camogie Association in helping to enhance and promote this unique sport.”
Sport for Business will look in detail at the background and the benefits of the Liberty Insurance sponsorship at the Business of Women’s Sport Conference in UCD Smurfit Business School on Thursday, June 20th.
