Limerick Hurler Gearód Hegarty together with Irish Rugby international Stacey Flood and Olympic hopeful Sharlene Mawdsley will be putting their shoulders to the wheel on Sunday in an ambitious initiative to pack 80,000 meals which will be boxed up and shipped to countries around the world where hunger is still a very real and present threat.

They will be among 300 volunteers brought together by restaurant chain Zambrero and packing the meals at St Mary’s Rugby Club in Rathmines in Dublin.

This is Zambrero’s second annual meal packing event in support of World Hunger Day. In addition, it will double donations for every burrito or bowl order placed on Sunday around the world, part of an ambitious goal to donate 1 billion meals by 2025

In Ireland where it now has 20 restaurants the number will be trebled.

“I am honoured to be a part of Zambrero’s efforts to combat global hunger,” said Mawdsley.

“Their commitment to making a difference is truly inspiring. The partnership with St. Mary’s College and the goal of packing 80,000 meals on World Hunger Day exemplify the positive change that can happen when communities come together.”

“It’s heart-warming to be a part of something that gives people who need food a chance,” added Hegartywho appeared on the Sport for Business Podcast yesterday to talk about the initiative, Hurling, the Cranberries and more.

“Zambrero’s dedication to addressing this critical issue is commendable, and I’m thrilled to be involved in this important cause.”

“Zambrero sets a remarkable example for organisations worldwide,” asaid Flood. “Their commitment to ending world hunger, one meal at a time, is a beacon of hope. It reminds us all that we can make a difference, and we should strive to do so.”

Zambrero’s mission to combat global hunger has been unwavering since its inception in 2005. Through their ground-breaking Plate4Plate program, Zambrero donates a nutritious meal to someone in need for every burrito or bowl sold at their restaurants.

This year, they are set to surpass their previous milestones, having already donated over 72 million meals globally, with 1.7 million of those contributed in Ireland.

Rise Against Hunger, Zambrero’s international distribution partner, plays a vital role in directing Zambrero’s Plate4Plate meals to communities in dire need worldwide, particularly in regions where access to adequate nutrition is scarce, primarily through school feeding programs.

“Our mission at Zambrero is to end world hunger one meal at a time,” said General Manager Darragh Fanning.

“This year, Zambrero Ireland is taking a bold step towards packing 80,000 meals for those who need it most. We are proud to support World Hunger Day and shed light on this pressing issue in today’s society.”
