Hockey Ireland has accepted an invitation to compete at the inaugural FIH Para Hockey World Cup, marking another significant step in the growth of inclusive hockey in Ireland and highlighting the tangible impact that the right commercial partnership can have on international participation.

Ireland’s HockeyID Team, representing athletes with Intellectual Disabilities, will travel to Belgium and the Netherlands from 21–25 August after accepting a late invitation to the tournament following Paraguay’s withdrawal.

The Irish team has been drawn in Pool A, alongside Pakistan, Belgium, France, Germany, Zambia, Italy and the United States, in what will be the first World Cup of its kind organised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

For Hockey Ireland, however, this story extends beyond the competition itself.  Earlier this year, Hockey Ireland and Special Olympics Ireland signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding to expand inclusive hockey opportunities for athletes with an intellectual disability across the island of Ireland.

The agreement formalises a partnership developed over the past four years and will see Hockey Ireland lead the delivery of field hockey as an official sporting opportunity for athletes with an intellectual disability through its nationwide club network.

The Ireland HockeyID Team will participate alongside Ireland’s senior women’s and men’s international teams during the wider Hockey World Cup programme, creating a powerful demonstration of how the sport is bringing together multiple international pathways on one global stage.

It represents an important statement about inclusion, visibility and the continuing development of opportunities for athletes with Intellectual Disabilities within international hockey.

The invitation also reflects the progress made by the programme following Ireland’s participation in the 2025 EuroHockey ID Championships, where the squad continued to establish itself within European competition.

Accepting a late World Cup invitation inevitably presented practical and financial challenges.

International competition requires travel, accommodation, equipment and logistical support, all of which must be secured within a compressed timeframe.

Hockey Ireland has acknowledged that Park Developments, title sponsor of the Hockey4All programme and a longstanding partner of the Ireland Women’s Hockey Team, provided additional financial support that enabled Ireland to accept the invitation and participate in the tournament.

It is an excellent example of sponsorship extending beyond branding to create a genuine sporting opportunity.

Rather than simply increasing visibility, the additional investment has helped ensure that Irish athletes with Intellectual Disabilities will have the opportunity to compete on the sport’s biggest international stage.

Park Developments’ support of Hockey4All has already contributed to the continued development of inclusive hockey across Ireland. The decision to provide further backing for the HockeyID programme demonstrates how long-term partnerships can respond to opportunities as they arise, ensuring athletes are not prevented from competing through financial constraints.

The tournament itself will also provide unprecedented visibility for Hockey Ireland’s inclusive programmes.

With the HockeyID team appearing as part of the wider World Cup programme alongside Ireland’s senior international squads, the event showcases a national governing body fielding multiple representative teams within a single global event, reinforcing the message that inclusion is integral to Irish hockey rather than a separate initiative.

Sport for Business Perspective

This partnership demonstrates an important dimension of commercial investment in sport: creating opportunities that would otherwise not exist.

The value of the relationship is measured not simply in impressions or logo exposure, but in enabling athletes to represent Ireland on the world stage.

As brands increasingly seek partnerships that demonstrate strong social impact, the relationship between Hockey Ireland and Park Developments provides a strong example of purpose-led sponsorship in action.

The additional support that enabled Ireland to accept its World Cup invitation illustrates how commercial investment can directly expand opportunities for participation and international representation.

At a time when governing bodies are placing greater emphasis on inclusion alongside high performance, this is exactly the type of partnership that deserves wider recognition—not because of the visibility it creates for a sponsor, but because of the opportunity it creates for athletes.
