Volleyball Ireland won an historic first ever Men’s underage medal in the European Volleyball Small Countries Association Championships over the weekend.
Alessandra Trio’s youngsters came from behind to defeat Northern Ireland 3:1, and finish third in the u20 Championships, which was held at the Sport Ireland Campus Dublin.
That victory meant successive wins for Ireland after overcoming Gibraltar on Saturday evening.
Carrick Crows man Emilio Tumatao hit the winning spike, to send the team and raucous crowd into raptures. The win was setup from SETU Carlow’s Patrick Cawley who led Ireland’s attack scoring 18points. He was well supported by Lochlann Donnelly and setter Roi Valdez..
Earlier in the day Scotland took gold, with a nail biting 3:2 victory over a talented San Marino.
Opposite Hitter Ewan Ramsey was the main man, and the standout player in the tournament. The tartan army now qualify for the EuroVolley finals in July.
Staging this tournament at the Sport Ireland Campus was a dry run for the European U20 Women’s Championships which will be held at the same venue in August.
