MEDALS MADE FROM THE EIFFEL TOWER
There will be 5,084 medals handed out at the Paris Olympic Games, and each one will forever have a piece of Paris.
Designed by French jeweller Chamet, the intention was to create something uniquely French. Each medal will have a hexagon-shaped insert made from metal gathered from the iconic landmark during its renovation and occasional repair.
The backs of the medals feature the Greek goddess Nike with the Acropolis and the Eiffel Tower in the background.
The medals have each been created by the French Mint, the Monnaie de Paris.
LEBRON TO CARRY THE USA FLAG
LeBron James has been selected to carry the Team USA Flag at Friday’s Opening Ceremony for the Olympic Games in Paris.
He follows Sue Bird, also from Basketball, who carried the flag in Tokyo.
James played in his first Olympic Games in 2004.
“It’s an incredible honour to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” he said yesterday after being told of his selection.
“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians, and so many people across the country with big aspirations. Sports can bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”
31 OF 32 COUNTIES REPRESENTED
One of the many lovely touches in the uniforms that team Ireland will wear for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Games is the embroidering of each individual’s county crest into the lining.
There are 31 of Ireland’s 32 counties represented as part of Team Ireland.
Can you guess which one will not be there? We will let you know in tomorrow’s Olympic Diary.
In the meantime here is the podcast interview we did with designer Laura Weber on creating the uniforms…
