The last time Drogheda United appeared in a Sports Direct FASI Cup, Final was just over a decade ago, in 2013 when the attendance at the Aviva Stadium was 17,573.
Tickets for the big game against Derry City on November 10th went on sale yesterday at noon, and within the first four hours, over 20,000 had already been snapped up.
It is a measure of how far we have bounced back from those darker economic times but also how far the League of Ireland has come in advancing with it’s own fan base as well as in the broader context.
Last year’s Final was the first at the Aviva Stadium to sell out when St. Patrick’s Athletic came out on top of a memorable game over Bohemians and several blocks within the two clubs’ allocations have already sold out after a matter of hours.
Drogheda has a population of only 44,000, and you can imagine that a sizable chunk of that will be wearing their colours and heading down by train and car.
Derry’s population is twice that and they may yet be coming as SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Champions at that stage as well.
As a neutral it is one of the Irish sporting events that everyone should experience once in their life, though having seen the colour, the noise and the passion, it is unlikely that you would not want to go back again and again.
The Final will take place on Sunday, 10 November 2024, at 15:00. Neutral fan area tickets are available through the link below.
