Coaching

The focus for today as part of Women in Sport Week is on coaching and Sport Ireland are hosting a free online webinar this evening.

In Coaching the Female Athlete, Sporting experts will explore knowledge gaps in relation to female athletes and discuss coaching opportunities and solutions.

Sport Ireland Women in Sport Lead Bethany Carson will be joined by Sport Ireland Institute Performance Nutritionist Danielle Logue, Sarah Jane Cullen from DCU and Olympian and Performance lead at Athletics Ireland Mark Kenneally for what should be an instructive session.

As a coach of boys and girls all the way from U6 to adult, the ways in which coaches need to prepare and deliver coaching to both is materially different. Of course the fundamentals are broadly similar in terms of the tactical and the physiological information but the way in which it should be delivered and the way in which a session is set up have significant differences, if you want to do it for maximum benefit.

Visibility

Yesterday was the Visibility pillar in focus and we highlighted the danger of missing out on the obvious ways in which male and female sport is portrayed visually in the three national mainstream newspapers and then at the end of the day on leading online sports site the 42 to which we had access.

The numbers yesterday were crushingly disappointing for the day and the week that are in it so we have decided to maintain our watching brief through the week.

SPORT FOR BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE

The purpose of calling out mainstream media is not to berate them but to point out the fact that culturally the things we do and the behaviours we accept are the real barometer of change.  This is Women in Sport Week.  They should be making more of an effort.

WHAT’S UP NEXT?

Wew will highlight later today some of the initiatives that are being shared around the Coaching pillar, and we will continue to shine this light on visibility.
