Team Ireland has landed in Maribor, Slovenia, ahead of the European Athletics Team Championships Division 2, taking place this Saturday and Sunday (June 28–29). With 43 athletes selected, Ireland will battle it out with 15 other nations for a coveted promotion to Division 1.
Each athlete will contest one of the 37 events on the programme, spanning track and field disciplines from sprints to steeplechase, pole vault to hammer throw. The competition uses a points system where finishing positions are critical – 16 points for a win, down to one for 16th, with no points awarded for DNFs or fouls.
Ireland must finish in the top three to gain promotion to Division 1, while the bottom three teams face relegation. Every point counts.
Saturday Highlights – June 28
The action begins at 1:30 pm with Sean Mockler in the Men’s Hammer and Shane Howard in the Long Jump. Donegal duo Arlene Crossan and Fintan Dewhirst will feature in the 400m Hurdles, while debutante Clodagh Walsh competes in the Pole Vault.
National record holders Niamh Fogarty (Discus) and Brian Fay (5000m) are among the big names on show, alongside rising stars Bori Akinola (100m) and Lucy-May Sleeman (100m). Olympians Eric Favors (Shot Put) and Sophie O’Sullivan (800m) add further strength.
The day concludes with the 4x100m relays. Ireland’s men’s sprint relay squad, fresh off a new national record (38.92s), will be aiming to go even faster.
Sunday Highlights – June 29
Sunday opens with Olympian Nicola Tuthill in the Hammer Throw. Saragh Buggy (Triple Jump), Sarah Lavin (100m Hurdles), and Marcus Lawler (200m) headline the second day’s lineup.
Debutants Adam Nolan (110m Hurdles) and Laura Nicholson (1500m) will gain valuable experience, while seasoned names like Roisin Flanagan (5000m) and Finley Daly (3000m Steeplechase) also take to the track.
The Championships wrap up with the always-exciting Mixed 4x400m Relay, with a strong Irish squad featuring Sharlene Mawdsley and Jack Raftery.
