The countdown is almost over. On Thursday evening, the spotlight will fall on Tallaght Stadium as the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Special Olympics Ireland National Games marks the beginning of what will be the largest inclusive sporting event staged in Ireland this year.

Across Friday to Sunday, more than 1,200 athletes from across the country will compete in an atmosphere defined as much by friendship and community as by sporting excellence. They will be supported by a remarkable network of more than 3,000 volunteers, coaches, and officials, and 1000’s more supporters.

Centred on the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus in Blanchardstown but stretching to venues across Dublin, the National Games will transform the capital into a celebration of inclusion, determination and achievement.

For many of the athletes, the Games represent years of preparation and dedication. For families, coaches and supporters, they are an opportunity to witness personal journeys that often transcend medals and results. Every event is a reminder of the power of sport to build confidence, create friendships and break down barriers.

The real impact will lie in the moments that unfold throughout the Games: an athlete achieving a personal best after months of training, teammates celebrating together regardless of the result, volunteers discovering the transformative power of giving their time, and spectators witnessing first-hand the joy and pride that inclusive sport can generate.

The Opening Ceremony at Tallaght Stadium promises to set that tone from the outset. Bringing together delegations from every corner of Ireland, in the company of President Catherine Connolly, it will celebrate not only competition but also the values that have underpinned the Special Olympics for more than half a century: courage, determination, inclusion and respect.

Those values have become increasingly important as Irish sport continues to focus on accessibility and participation. The National Games stand as a powerful demonstration that high-quality sporting competition and genuine inclusion go hand in hand, providing a platform where athletes with intellectual disabilities can perform at their very best while inspiring communities across the country.

For volunteers, many of whom have travelled with regional delegations or signed up specifically for the event, the Games offer the chance to become part of something much bigger than themselves. Their contribution will make every competition, every venue and every athlete experience possible.

As Thursday night’s ceremony draws near, anticipation is building not simply for a sporting festival but for a showcase of what inclusion looks like in practice. In a year packed with major events across the Irish sporting calendar, the Special Olympics Ireland National Games may prove to be the one that leaves the deepest and most lasting impression.
