More than 2,500 volunteers who helped deliver the Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games have been recognised by Stena Line for their extraordinary contribution to one of the largest inclusive sporting events held on the island of Ireland in 2026.
Across four days of competition from 18 to 21 June, volunteers from every corner of Ireland gave a combined 72,000 hours in support of athletes, families, organisers and spectators across 15 venues in Dublin.
Their contribution was central to the success of the Games, which brought together 1,277 Special Olympics athletes competing across a wide range of sports including football, swimming, gymnastics, golf, equestrian, basketball and athletics.
Competitors ranged in age from nine to 81 and were cheered on by an average of 1,800 spectators each day, creating a festival atmosphere around the Games and underlining the scale of the logistical operation required to bring the event to life.
From welcoming delegations and coordinating transport to assisting spectators and supporting competitions, volunteers played a vital role in creating a memorable and inclusive experience for athletes and families.
To mark that contribution, Stena Line surprised a number of volunteers with complimentary Irish Sea ferry travel as a token of appreciation and a chance to enjoy a well-deserved break after the Games.
As proud sponsors of Special Olympics Ireland, Stena Line said the gesture was designed to recognise not only the scale of the volunteer effort but also the spirit, commitment and passion that helped make the Summer Games such a success.
“We were blown away by so many brilliant performances by the athletes at the Summer Games, and we understand that the supporting role volunteers played at these games was truly extraordinary,” said Orla Noonan, Travel Commercial Manager, Irish Sea at Stena Line.
“At Stena Line, we wanted to say a heartfelt thank you and show them just how valued and appreciated they are.
“Partnerships like this go beyond supporting sport. They change lives, build stronger communities and foster real inclusion. We are proud that our four-year partnership with Special Olympics Ireland allows us to support the organisation, its athletes and the volunteers whose dedication makes events like these possible.
“The stories behind the Summer Games are exactly the kinds of moments that inspire our #StenaSpecialJourneys campaign, celebrating the people who make a real difference, including the incredible athletes, volunteers and families at the heart of this event,” she added.
The 72,000 hours given by volunteers would be valued at more than €1 million if paid at minimum wage, a striking illustration of the human commitment that sits behind major sporting events of this scale.
Stena Line has also supported the Games’ Support An Athlete campaign, which has raised more than €120,000 to date. Special Olympics Ireland is continuing to encourage organisations and members of the public to contribute and help the campaign reach its target through www.irelandgames.ie.
