Sports Direct has extended its partnership with the Northern Ireland Football League for a further three seasons, continuing as the organisation’s Official Sports Retail Partner.

The renewed agreement will see the retailer support the men’s and women’s Premiership competitions, as well as the NIFL Championship, maintaining its association with clubs and supporters across the domestic game.

Sports Direct described the agreement as the beginning of a new chapter in its relationship with NIFL, with a continued commitment to supporting players, clubs and fans at every level of football in Northern Ireland.

The retailer first joined NIFL in April 2023 under a three-year agreement that made it title sponsor of both the men’s and women’s Premierships. At the time, the partnership was described as the biggest commercial agreement in the league’s history.

Its renewed involvement represents a change in position rather than an ending of the relationship.

BoyleSports was announced in June as NIFL’s new principal title partner under a separate three-year agreement covering the Premiership, Championship and Women’s Premiership. That deal is valued at more than £1 million and is now the largest commercial partnership secured by the league.

Sports Direct will remain title sponsor of the Women’s Premiership for the remainder of the 2026 season before moving fully into its broader sports retail partnership role.

For NIFL, retaining Sports Direct alongside the arrival of BoyleSports demonstrates the value of maintaining relationships with established sponsors while creating space for new investment.

Rather than losing a partner when the original title sponsorship concluded, NIFL has repositioned Sports Direct within its commercial portfolio and retained the retailer’s investment, audience reach and activation potential.

“Our partnership with Sports Direct has been crucial in supporting the growth of the league over the past three seasons,” said Regan McFarland, Head of Partnerships at NIFL, announcing the extension.

“We’re proud to continue our partnership with the Northern Ireland Football League and support the continued growth of the game across Northern Ireland,” added Ciara Murray, Head of Marketing at Sports Direct Ireland.

“Over the past three seasons, we’ve seen first-hand the passion of the fans, clubs and communities, and we’re excited to build on that momentum. We look forward to creating even more engaging experiences for supporters.”

Sport for Business Perspective

The continuation comes during a period of sustained commercial and audience growth for domestic football in Northern Ireland.

NIFL recorded more than 100 million digital video views during the previous season and reported its strongest commercial revenue performance to date. The opening weekend of the 2025/26 campaign alone generated almost five million digital views, while match attendances increased by 26 per cent compared with the equivalent weekend a year earlier.

Sports Direct also maintains a substantial sponsorship portfolio across Irish sport, including Cork and Louth GAA, the LGFA Gaelic4Mothers&Others programme and the Dublin Marathon series.

The latest extension ensures that Sports Direct will remain visible in Northern Irish club football for another three seasons, while allowing NIFL to build a broader and increasingly valuable group of commercial partners around its competitions.
