Lidl Ireland is extending its commercial partnership around Katie Taylor’s historic Croke Park homecoming with the launch of limited-edition boxing shorts, with proceeds going to Family Carers Ireland.
The retailer, which is Title Event Partner for Taylor’s farewell fight against Flora Pili on Saturday, September 5, has unveiled the ‘In Katie’s Corner’ limited-edition shorts, giving supporters another way to become part of what will be one of the biggest Irish sporting occasions of the year.
The shorts will be priced at €25 and available online from Friday, August 28, with all proceeds going to Family Carers Ireland, Lidl Ireland’s charity partner.
The campaign brings together a number of strands of Lidl’s investment in Irish sport, particularly women’s sport.
Among those supporting the launch are former Dublin footballer Hannah Tyrrell, former Republic of Ireland international Stephanie Zambra and Ireland rugby international Edel McMahon, alongside young fighters from Liberty Boxing Club in Bray, including members of Taylor’s extended family.
It is another activation centred on a partnership that has grown substantially since Lidl was confirmed as the Title Event Partner for the Croke Park fight.
Taylor will face undefeated French fighter Flora Pili in front of a sold-out crowd of 80,000, bidding to finish her career by becoming an undisputed world champion for a third time. The event is being promoted by Matchroom Boxing in association with Aiken Promotions and Brian Peters.
It will also bring professional boxing back to Croke Park for the first time since Muhammad Ali fought Alvin Lewis there in 1972.
Building Beyond the Event
The limited-edition shorts are interesting from a sports business perspective because they take Lidl’s involvement beyond conventional event branding.
The retailer has built a campaign around the idea of being ‘In Katie’s Corner’, creating a connection between its event sponsorship, Taylor’s relationship with the Irish public and a charitable cause.
It also fits naturally alongside Lidl’s much longer investment in women’s sport.
Earlier this year, Taylor joined Lidl at the launch of the 2026 Lidl National Football League and its ‘Greatness Deserves to be Seen’ campaign. At the same event, Lidl extended its partnership with the LGFA through to 2030, committing a further €7.5 million and bringing its total investment in the association since 2016 to €22.5 million.
That gives the Taylor partnership a broader context than simply attaching a brand to one major night at Croke Park.
The shorts create a relatively simple piece of fan merchandise, but one that carries several layers: support for Taylor, visibility for the Lidl partnership, and fundraising for Family Carers Ireland.
A National Audience
The commercial value of the association was strengthened further last week when RTÉ confirmed that Taylor against Pili will be available free-to-air on RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player, with live radio coverage on RTÉ 2FM.
That significantly expands the potential audience for the event and the brands associated with it beyond the 80,000 supporters inside Croke Park.
For Lidl, the limited-edition shorts are another example of how sponsorship rights can be turned into something tangible that supporters can engage with.
For Taylor, whose influence has stretched far beyond boxing throughout her career, linking that engagement to a charitable contribution adds another dimension to the build-up to September 5.
The ‘In Katie’s Corner’ shorts will cost €25 and go on sale online through Lidl Ireland from Friday, August 28.
