The AIG Women’s Open Championship is underway at Royal Porthcawl this morning with all four of this season’s Major winners in the field alongside Leona Maguire, Lauren Walsh and Anna Foster from Ireland.

There is plenty of additional Irish interest as well with KPMG Women’s Irish Open winner from earlier this month, Lottie Woad, one of the leading contenders, and previous winner and competitor in Ireland for the past two years, Georgia Hall and Charley Hull, fresh from appearances at Carton House and in Happy Gilmore 2, also in the field.

Royal Porthcawl is a first-time host venue for the Championship, having previously hosted the Curtis Cup and the Men’s Senior Open, and already looks visually stunning.

Leona Maguire comes into contention having completed a fourth Top 20 Major finish at the Evian Championship, where Lottie Woad finished third in her final competition as an amateur.  She then went on to win the Scottish Open last week, ahead of a strong field, and suggestions of her having the potential to be as dominant an influence as Tiger Woods was on the Men’s game are beginning to gain traction.

Anna Foster, in her rookie year as a professional, qualified as the second-highest of those who had to fight for their place in the field.  She and Lottie Woad are out on the course in the afternoon, with Lauren Walsh and Leona Maguire among the early starters.

There is full coverage over the next four days on Sky Sports.

AIG backs the tournament which has a prize fund of almost US$10 million as well as the prestige of being the final major of the season.
