Amazon Prime has moved to increase its sporting footprint by taking on the right to broadcast 17 of this season’s 20 Autumn Series Internationals.
The only three remaining outside the streaming giant’s reach are the games featuring Ireland which will remain for this year on RTÉ and Channel 4.
That replicates the coverage which applied to the series of games in 2020, packaged as the Autumn Nations Cup in the middle of the pandemic, but the suggestion yesterday was that the circle would be completed with Amazon taking over all the games, for the UK market at least, including those of Ireland in 2022.
Last years other matches were also shown in Ireland on Premier Sports.
Ireland will play Japan, Argentina and the All Blacks in November with crowds expected to return in significant numbers to the Aviva Stadium.
All the games involving England, France, Wales, Scotland and Italy will now be exclusive to Amazon Prime which has a range of subscription options linked in to different levels of Amazon engagement.
It is heavy on US TV Drama and first-run movie content but has an expanding appetite for sport with one full series of English Premier League games as well as other international sporting events, and the All or Nothing series of sports documentaries.
“We have worked closely with all our unions to agree on a schedule of fixtures that minimises overlaps making it possible for supporters in the UK and Ireland to watch every single match from the home teams in a series that will showcase the best teams from the Northern and Southern hemispheres,” said Ben Morel, CEO of Six Nations Rugby.
