Australia does not have any grey areas when it comes to Covid-19, an approach which has served them well and which has given rise to the optimism of having 50 per cent attendance and 30,000 spectators a day at the Australian Open tennis.
This morning though that is hanging in the balance after a single positive test from a hotel worker where over 500 players, coaches and officials had been staying in quarantine.
Warm-up tournaments were cancelled and players have been advised to self-isolate ahead of receiving tests over the next 24 hours.
“Health authorities have advised us that a hotel quarantine worker has tested positive for COVID-19,” said a statement from tournament organisers
“Those associated with the Australian Open who quarantined at the hotel now need to be tested and isolate until they receive a negative test result.”
“We will work with everyone involved to facilitate testing as quickly as possible.”
“There will be no matches at Melbourne Park on Thursday.”
“An update on the schedule for Friday will be announced later today.”
The tournament was due to get underway on Monday and run for two weeks with coverage here on Amazon.
