Basketball Ireland became the latest sport to hold its first ever virtual AGM on Saturday with 54 people in attendance.
The AGM was originally due to take place on June 6th, but multiple postponements due to Covid-19 restrictions meant it was necessary to switch to a virtual format.
Two new Board Directors were elected. Former Basketball Ireland president Theresa Walsh, who had a four-year term in the role, was elected to the Board. Tony Burke, who has been involved in Irish basketball for the last 58 years, was also elected.
“With Covid-19 we’ve all had to adapt and switching to a virtual AGM over Zoom is one of those instances,” said Chair Paul McDevitt.
“It was a huge success with 54 people in attendance. I would like to welcome Theresa Walsh and Tony Burke on to the Board and I am sure they will prove to be fine additions.”
“I would like to thank our three outgoing Directors. Charles Higgins has put in tireless work as Chair of our ‘Return to Play’ group, as Basketball Ireland negotiated the challenges presented by Covid-19. I would hope that he continues to serve the organisation in this capacity.”
Sinead Gordon stood down from the Board due to work commitments as Operations Manager at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus while Tim Murphy retired having completed his maximum term.
The Board will appoint a new co-opt Director, to replace Tim Murphy, in the coming weeks.
Writing in the Annual report published in June Secretary General Bernard O’Byrne had said “When I told a staff meeting last year that I wanted to make 2020 a memorable year for the 75th anniversary of Basketball Ireland, I could not know the year was going to be a lifelong memory for a very different reason.”
“I know that we all agree that the only important thing for all of us is the health and well-being of our families and friends and I hope we all
come through this experience unscathed. I want to sincerely thank all members of the basketball community who are front-liners or work in
support of the front-liners. We will have to find a way to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts when normality returns.”
“I want to mention the landmark achievement during the year of finally clearing all legacy financial items after many years of hard work. Successive Boards, BIHQ staff and the entire basketball community can take pride in a herculean effort to achieve this position.”
The total surplus for the year was €106,000 on total revenue of €2.44 million with sponsorship income climbing from €170,000 to €194,000.
