Parkour missed out but Breaking, a competitive form of Break Dancing, will be included as an Olympic sport for the first time in Paris 2024.

Surfing, Sport Climbing and Skateboarding will also be included as the International Olympic Committee made a firm move towards youth events.

The overall number of events is down by 10 to 329 on what will be the case in Tokyo and the overall number of athletes is also to be reduced from over 11,0000 in Summer 2021 to 10,500 in 2024.

Gender equality is to the fore with a 50 per cent split in the quota of athletes for the first time. It will be 48.8 per cent in Tokyo and was 45.6 per cent for Rio.

There will be 22 as opposed to 18 mixed gender events, with one new such event in Athletics to be decided by the end of May 2021 to replace the 50 Kilometre Men’s Walk.

Boxing will now have seven Men’s and six Women’s weight classes, as opposed to eight and five in Tokyo with the final determination of them due also at the end of May.

“With this programme, we are making the Olympic Games Paris 2024 fit for the post-corona world,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.

“We are further reducing the cost and complexity of hosting the Games. While we will achieve gender equality already at the upcoming Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, we will see for the first time in Olympic history the participation of the exact same number of female athletes as male athletes. There is also a strong focus on youth.”
