Team Ireland marked Olympic Day 2026 yesterday with a celebration of movement, community, and Olympic spirit at the Sport Ireland Campus, embracing this year’s global theme, “Let’s Move.”

Observed annually on June 23rd, Olympic Day commemorates the founding of the modern Olympic Movement and encourages participation in sport and physical activity worldwide. This year’s campaign places a particular emphasis on overcoming self-doubt, encouraging people of all ages to take that first step, however uncertain it may feel.

The message at the heart of the campaign is  “You can do this. One breath. One step. One imperfect start.”

The Team Ireland event brought together Olympians from multiple generations, staff from National Federations, and members of Ireland’s wider Olympic community for a day centred on connection, activity and shared experiences.

A mixed-team 3×3 basketball tournament, hosted by Basketball Ireland, provided the focal point of the celebrations. Olympians and representatives from a range of Olympic sports took part in the friendly competition, while informal conversations continued throughout the day in a relaxed setting created around a coffee truck on site.

One of the most symbolic moments came when the Irish Olympians Association planted a tree named The Olympic Flame on the campus. Led by Association President Róisín McGettigan-Dumas, the ceremony served as a reminder of the resilience, belief and enduring values that underpin the Olympic Movement.

The tree was planted as a lasting symbol of confidence and courage, reinforcing the day’s central message that movement begins with belief in oneself.

The celebration also extended online, with Olympians sharing personal stories and images across Team Ireland’s social media channels. The campaign highlights that every Olympian’s journey began with a first step and that progress is rarely perfect from the outset.

Speaking at the event, Lochlann Walsh, OFI President, reflected on the significance of the day.

“Olympic Day is a celebration of movement, belief and the people who make the Olympic Movement in Ireland so special,” he said.

“The theme Let’s Move reminds us that readiness is not a feeling; it is an action. Taking that first step, even when you doubt yourself, is what sport teaches us. Seeing Olympians, colleagues and friends come together today shows the power of sport to inspire confidence, connection and joy.”

Olympic Day remains one of the most important annual moments for the global Olympic community, celebrating not only elite sporting achievement but also the values of participation, friendship and personal growth.

The day offered a timely reminder that while Olympic success may be measured in medals, it always begins with the courage to take that first step.
