The Final Round of the Vodafone Women’s Interpro’s takes place this weekend. Munster have already qualified for next week’s final at Musgrave Park but who they will face is still very much in the mix.

Leinster travel south knowing they will have to win against Munster or that Connacht would overtake them with a win over Ulster.

Connacht’s first round win over Leinster set up an unexpected level of uncertainty over the final round with the crunch games being televised live on TG4.

Munster’s Maeve Óg O’Leary took time out from preparation yesterday to meet with media and launch the new Irish Women’s jersey from Canterbury.

It will be worn in the new Women’s Rugby WXV tournament being played in Dubai in October. Ireland will face Kazakhstan, Colombia and Spain in the Third Division, hoping to progress and ultimately secure qualification for the Women’s Rugby World Cup which will take place in England in 2025.

O’Leary was working with the team from Teneo in promoting the Canterbury shirt, before heading back to Wilson Hartnell where she work’s on a part-time basis alongside her central contract with the IRFU.

All four of the teams have been doing training at the High Performance Centre and the players likely to feature in the International squad have been meeting this week with new coach Scott Bermand.

Despite TG4’s coverage of the games they have been swamped for coverage by the build up to the Men’s Rugby World Cup, a clash that is worthwhile given the clearer structure there is for the Women’s game this season, factoring in International, provincial and club windows.

This is especially important in the Women’s game where the numbers coming through from young players is still in its infancy.

“I only started playing when I was 15,” said O’Leary. “It is a challenge but the Give it a Try programme has introduced young girls to the sport and there are Junior and Senior Cups in schools now in Munster so these are all steps forward.”

The smaller player base at the top level is challenged further by the Sevens team having had such success and securing qualification for the Paris Olympic Games next summer.

“There is a lot to catch the eye but we just focus on one window at a time,” she continued. Right now that’s the Vodafone Interpro’s and it’s just great to be playing, and hoping to prove I am worth a place on the plane to Dubai.

The new Jerseys are on sale now via Intersports Elverys, in store and on Elverys.ie and on Canterbury.com.
