Michael Carroll, a 30 year old amateur rugby player with Blackrock College RFC has been handed a 12 month suspension by the Irish Sports Council following a positive
test for a banned substance after a game against Clontarf on October 1st.
The former Connacht player pleaded guilty to inadvertently taking methylhexaneamine, which was in an energy drink he had taken to combat the effects of fatigue brought on
by balancing work and his commitment to rugby. He will not appeal the suspension.
Carroll was club captain this season and his father is serving as the club President.
“I would never have thought this could happen to me. I consider myself a decent person
who had a good rugby career. I regret it, but it has happened so I just have to
deal with it,” said Carroll.
The Irish Sports Council disciplinary panel accepted that Carroll did not show any intent
to enhance his performance, and that he believed the drink ‘1 more rep’ did not
contain any prohibited substance.
