We continue our new series this morning entitled Champions of the Weekend where we will select three performances from Irish sport that are worthy of the title.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Dublin City Council, one of Sport for Business’ partners and backers of our coverage of Sport in the Community.

Kilkerrin-Clonberne

To win an AIB All Ireland Club Championship is an incredible achievement, to do so four times in a row is exceptional.

That is what the Galway and Connacht Champions of Kilkerrin-Clonberne did on Saturday, defeating Dublin champions Kilmacud Crokes by 0-13 to 0-09 in a game where they always had the upper hand.

With Three Divilly’s, Three Noone’s and two Ward’s on the starting line up for the Champions this was very much a family affair. Kilkerrin has a population according to latest census data of a little over 5,000, marginally ahead of the full membership of Kilmacud Crokes.

Paul O’Donovan

Paul O’Donovan became the first Irish Rower to win the RTÉ Sport Sports Person of the Year Award in the event televised from the RTÉ Studios in front of a live audience of his peers on Sunday night.

Swim Ireland World Championship Team

Shane Ryan secored a bronze medal at the Swimming World Championships in Budapest and Ellen Walshe lowered Irish Records eight times across four different events.

The Irish team travelled without its two Olympic Games medallists but still produced five finalist and 11 semi finalists at the highest level of the World Championships, a remarkable level of achievement.
