Each weekend we select performances from Irish sport that are worthy of highlighting. This weekend we are looking at Rugby, Athletics, Basketball, Hockey, Cricket and Camogie.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Sky Ireland, one of Sport for Business’ partners and backers of our coverage of football.
Sam Prendergast
It was said he was too young and too inexperienced but Sam Prendergast was the Player of the Match in the Guinness Men’s Six nations win over Scotland on Sunday, on the field and in the maturity of his post match interviews, showing that keeping the faith in a player at the start of his career can be a winning choice.
Andrew Coscoran, Sarah Healy and Mark English
For the second weekend in a row these first two athletes make our Champions of the weekend for their exploits on the US Indoor Athletics Circuit.
Coscoran broke Ray Flynn’s record for the Mile that had stood since July 1982, the Balbriggan man running 3:49.26 to finish seventh in the historic Wanamaker Mile race.
Coscoran’s latest record-breaking feat comes less than a week after he set an Irish indoor 3000m record of 7:30.75 in Boston.
Healy was also in top form on Saturday night as she lowered her own Irish indoor 3000m record for the second time this season.
The Dubliner, who turns 24 this week, clocked a time of 8:30.79 to finish third in her race, shaving almost 5 seconds off the record she set last week in Boston.
And less than half an hour after Healy’s race, Mark English had one of the performances of his career to take a chunk off his own Irish senior indoor 800m record.
The Donegal athlete crossed the line in fourth in a time of 1:45.15, nearly one second faster than his previous indoor best set in 2021.
Irish Men’s Cricket
The Irish Men’s Cricket team were playing a one-off test match against Zimbabwe through the weekend and this morning sealed a third test win in a row.
Railway Union Hockey
The Dublin Club became National Indoor Hockey Champions with a win over near neighbours Pembroke.
Basketball Ireland
A sold out National Basketball Arena and a thriller of a game for the Irish Women’s Team who just went down 96-90 against Latvia, almost pulling off a major upset in the Women’s Eurobasket Qualifiers.
University of Limerick Camogie
UL won their second Electric Ireland Ashbourne Cup in a row at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence on Sunday afternoon, beating UCC by two points.
Fair play as well to Connacht GAA for getting the games on despite the fact that the dome covering the main pitch was lost to Storm Eowyn only weeks ago.
