Each weekend we select three performances from Irish sport that are worthy of highlighting.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Allianz, one of Sport for Business’ partners and backers of our coverage of Inclusion and Children’s Sport as well as sponsors of the Allianz League this weekend.
Crossmolina and Conor Loftus
The AIB Intermediate All Ireland Club Football Final was postponed from two weeks ago due to the tragic death of Róisín Cryan, finace af club and county star Conor Loftus.
Yesterday in Croke Park he stepped up to score a penalty in the sixth minute of injury time against Ballinderry to seal a come from behind victory and the title.
That kind of character and the support of the club through such a time of personal grief is unimaginably strong.
The New Football Rules in Gaelic Football
This was the first weekend of inter county action using the new football rules and they were universally acclaimed as having been a major step forward.
Storm damage meant that the signature match of Division One in the Allianz League, the clash between Dublin and Mayo was unavailable to many viewers but the games that did make it, and the crowds that attended matches live were very positive about the changes.
Armagh Ladies Football
It was also the opening weekend of the Lidl Ladies Football national League and Armagh hit the ground running taking down TG4 All Ireland Champions Kerry in the opening round of the defence of the title they won last season.
