Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports worthy of highlighting. This weekend, we highlight action in Golf, Gaelic Football, Hurling, Show Jumping, Rugby, Swimming and Athletics.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Lidl, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our coverage of Women’s Sport.
The KPMG Women’s Irish Open
Four years ago, when the Women’s Irish Open was revived by Forefront Sports and KPMG, with the support of Golf Ireland, Sport Ireland and many more, there were three Irish golfers in the field and a dream of more. This past week, there were 16, led by young professional Anna Foster on the final leaderboard, competing against a world-class lineup. The 2025 edition was won by young English amateur Lottie Woad, who has the potential to become one of the greats. It has become one of the events of the Irish sporting summer.
Cork and Tipperary Hurlers
Two outstanding performances in the All-Ireland Hurling Championship Semi-Finals have teed up a meeting between two of the sport’s greatest rivals that has, almost unbelievably, never been played in an All-Ireland Hurling Final.
Tyrone Minor Footballers
Diarmuid Martin scored the late, late winning point that secured the Electric Ireland Minor Football Championship for Tyrone in Newbridge on Sunday. This is the ninth time the County has won the All-Ireland at this level and the first since 2010.
Daniel Coyle
Derry rider Daniel Coyle continued the strong 2025 being enjoyed by Team Ireland show jumpers, winning the Million Dollar Atco Queen Elizabeth Cup in Canada on Saturday.
Paul O’Connell
Paul O’Connell had his first game as Manager of Ireland in the Irish Rugby Summer Series, securing a 34-5 victory over Georgia in Tbilisi on Saturday.
Dublin, Galway, Kerry and Meath
The four favourites came through their TG4 All Ireland Ladies Football Championship Quarter Finals over the weekend, teeing up a double header in Tullamore at the semi-final stage in two weeks time.
John Shortt and Grace Davison
John Shortt and Grace Davison brought the curtain down on the 2025 European Aquatics Championships in spectacular fashion with gold and bronze medal wins on the final night of racing in Samorin, Slovakia.
Precious Akpe-Moses
Akpe-Moses was the star of the Athletics Ireland U20 Championships in Tullamore on Saturday winning both the 100 and 200 metre finals and setting a new Championship record in the latter.
