Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports worthy of highlighting. This weekend, we highlight action in F1, Golf, Rowing, Swimming, Athletics, Volleyball and Gaelic Football.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Sky, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our coverage of Football.

Alex Dunne

Alex Dunne from Offaly became the first Irish driver from the Republic of Ireland since Ralph Firman in 2002 over the weekend when competing in the first practice session at the Austrian Grand Prix with his Team McLaren.  He currently leads the F2 standings and stepped up as part of his development.  The Team lead the F1 standings as well and Lando Norris went on to win the race.

Padraig Harrington

Padraig Harrington won the US Seniors Open for the second time last night, beating US Golfer Stewart Cink by one shot.  He shot three under in his final round, playing alongside Cink, and had a tap-in putt to win on the 18th green.  Harrington won the Open Championship in 2007 and 2008 and the US PGA in 2008 as well.

Fiona Murtagh

Fiona Murtagh of Galway claimed the silver medal in the Women’s Single Sculls at the Rowing World Cup in Lucerne with a time of 07:18.63. In a highly competitive field, Fiona held second place throughout the race, consistently pushing the pace. At the 1000 metre mark, she trailed race favourite Lauren Henry of Great Britain by just 0.3 seconds and kept the pressure on right to the finish.

Fintan McCarthy and Konan Pazzaia

Fintan McCarthy and Konan Pazzaia secured a bronze medal in the Men’s Double Sculls at the same event.

Sarah Lavin

Sarah Lavin took Ireland’s only win of the weekend at the European Team Atrhletics Championships in Slovenia over the weekend,  earning maximum points for her country in the Women’s 100m Hurdles. The Limerick sprinter clocked a time of 12.82 seconds in still conditions to claim victory.

Ellie McCartney

Ellie McCartney made it a full set of medals with a sensational silver in the 200m Breaststroke at the European U23 Championships.  This was in addition to gold in the 200m Individual Medley and bronze in the 100m Breaststroke.

Meath Gaelic Footballers

Full credit to all the Quarter Final winners in the All Ireland Football Championship Quarter Finals over the weekend, including Donegal, Tyrone and Kerry but a special word for Meath who came from the furthest back in the pack coming into this season but who showed, skill, courage and determination to get past Galway in a dramatic second half at Croke Park on Sunday.

Volleyball Ireland Women’s Team

Volleyball Ireland staged the first Senior International tournament on Irish soil in over two decades over the weekend and came away with a bronze medal after losing out to tournament winners Scotland in the semi-final.  Great atmosphere, great group topping performance with two wins in the group stage.
