Ireland’s rising swimming star Ellie McCartney claimed a stunning hat-trick of medals at the European U23 Championships in Slovakia. At the same time, Ellen Walshe did the same at the prestigious Sette Colli meet in Rome over the weekend.
McCartney, 20, from Enniskillen, was the standout performer in Šamorín, producing a gold medal swim in the 200m Individual Medley with a personal best of 2:12.50, trimming over a second and a half off her previous best. The time also came in well under the World Championship qualification standard of 2:12.83.
The gold was part of a complete medal set for McCartney, who also won bronze in the 100m breaststroke (1:07.58) and silver in the 200m breaststroke (2:24.02).
“Overall, this has been a massive step forward,” said McCartney, who now turns her focus to Singapore for the Worlds.
Ireland’s medal haul at the U23’s was bolstered by Eoin Corby, who took silver in the men’s 200m breaststroke in 2:10.50, while a number of other young Irish swimmers delivered promising performances as part of their development or final preparations for the global stage.
Meanwhile, in Rome, Ellen Walshe added further sparkle to Ireland’s week, claiming gold in the 400m Individual Medley, silver in the 200m butterfly, and bronze in the 200m IM.
Mona McSharry secured two silver medals at the Sette Colli meet, clocking 1:06.86 in the 100m breaststroke and 2:25.05 in the 200m event — both season’s bests.
The performances bode well for the World Aquatics Championship taking place in Singapore from July 11th to August 3rd.
