Each weekend, we highlight some of the performances that light up the Irish sporting landscape.
This weekend, we highlight action in Women’s Football, Hurling, Golf, Cycling, Motor racing, Rugby and Horse racing.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to you by PwC, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our recognition each year of the Sport for Business PwC 30 under 30.
Republic of Ireland Women’s Footballers
The performance against the Netherlands on Friday night in Cork will live long in the memory. Effectively winning the game three times with goals from Kyra Carusa, Abbie Larkin and Amber Barrett, it is a third consecutive win at the top flight of European Football and sets up Tuesday’s Grenoble clash with France as a chance to book a ticket direct to next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Limerick Hurlers
Another day, but same venue as above for the Munster Hurling Championship Final and a massive game with Limerick emerging on top, but many feeling that the sides will meet again in the All-Ireland next month.
Hurling Goalkeepers
Nicky Quaid for Limerick and Patrick Collins for Cork pulled off at least four goal-stopping saves, any of which would be a contender for hurling moment of the season.
Alex Dunne
The Offaly racing driver claimed his second second place of the season in the Formula Two World Championship, adding a podium finish on the streets of Monaco to his runner-up spot in Canada earlier in the season
KPMG Women’s Irish Open
Charley Hull will return to the KPMG Women’s Irish Open at the K Club in August. Her stock as one of the World’s leading golfers rose again on Sunday night as she contended all the way to the final hole in the US Women’s ~Open, before coming in one shot behind winner Nelly Korda.
Lara Gillespie
The Wicklow woman finished fourth overall in the Points classification at the prestigious Giro d’Italia after a week of hard racing.
Leinster Rugby
Bouncing back from last weekend’s European Final disappointment, Leinster secured a place in this year’s URC Grand Final which will take place at Croke Park against the Bulls on Friday week.
Aidan O’Brien
Christmas Day’s victory in the Epsom Derby on Saturday was a remarkable 50th British Classic and 12th Epsom Derby for Aidan O’Brien, surging further and further ahead as the greatest racehorse trainer of all time.
