Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that deserve recognition. This weekend, we highlight action in Football, Basketball, Rugby, Gaelic Football and Showjumping.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Allianz, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our annual Children and Sport and Sport for Social Good Coverage.
Cork City and Shamrock Rovers
Shamrock Rovers have been a dominant force in the League of Ireland in recent years, but have only won the Sports Direct FAI Cup once in almost 40 years. Cork City caused an upset on Friday night, beating St Patrick’s Athletic, and the two will bring a large fan base to the Aviva Stadium for the final in November. The two sides have never met in the Final.
Basketball
The Domino’s Men’s and Women’s Super league competitions got underway over the weekend with strong attendance, live streaming and excitement on the court. The high-scoring game of the week was the UCC Demons’ local derby win by 115-105 over Energywise Ireland Neptune.
UL Bohemians
Gaelic Football
The changes to the Gaelic Football Rules that brought the game back to life this season were officially voted through after their trial at a special congress of the GAA on Saturday. It was the high point of Jim Gavin’s weekend, 36 hours before he withdrew from the race to become President.
Irish Show Jumping Team
Team Ireland secured Silver at the Nations League Final in Barcelona on Sunday afternoon, only missing out on Gold by less than a quarter of a second after Britain and Ireland faced each other in a jump-off that went down to this narrowest of margins.
