This afternoon’s first ever virtual congress of the GAA has approved the motion that changes to the structure of the GAA Championships can now be made by the Management Committee of the Association, temporarily ceding their exclusive right to approve changes.
The period in which such changes can be brought into effect is limited to twelve weeks but with an option for a further eight if needed.
It was agreed unanimously as expected and now we must wait on how the greater societal changes play out with regard to controlling the danger of COVID-19.
There is a mixed view on whether the Championship should be played this year at all or whether it might be done behind closed doors or much later in the year.
None of the views is trenchantly held though as most sensible folk wait to see how things develop, as is right.
Last week Sport for Business put forward three potential scenarios for playing Championships across all four codes with a July, August and September start date.
We will though have a better idea of whether any of those are in any way realistic when the current tight restrictions are reviewed in the next two weeks.
What might a 2020 Championship look like?
