Connacht Rugby CelebrationsIt was a memorable day to crown a wonderful season and Irish rugby fans tuned in in their hundreds of thousands to watch Connacht’s Guinness Pro12 Final at BT Murrayfield Stadium on Saturday.

Official TAM Ireland figures released to Sport for Business show that  the Westeners’ spectacular win over their Leinster neighbours was viewed by over a fifth of all those watching TV in Ireland during the final (21%).

In total, a half a million viewers (496,000) tuned to TG4 for some part of the evening’s coverage of Final with an average 187,000 people viewing the full match from beginning to end.

We have not yet been able to see the figures on BT Sport for the English Aviva Premiership Final but it is likely that they were not as high as for the Pro12

“This weekend was a very special one for Irish rugby with two or our provinces contesting the final of this major international competition,” said TG4 Ardstiúrthóir Pól Ó Gallchóir.

“The weather, the quality of rugby, the passion of the intrepid travelling supporters, the historic result and the joyful celebrations that rounded off the day all combined to make for thrilling television and we were delighted to be there to bring it to our viewers, free to view.”

It’s a day that will live long in the memory and it promises to be a joyous summer of anticipation for the team, the fans and the no less that 23 commercial partners that are on board.
