The World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Australia and the World Gay Games in Hong Kong have both been postponed and will now take place in 2023.

Both countries still have strong restrictions on incoming visitors and organisers have moved early to make alternative arrangements for their staging.

The Cross Country was originally pushed back to 2021 but will now be held on February 23rd 2023 at the famous Mount Panorama motor racing circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales.

The European Championships will still be held at the Sport Ireland Campus in Dublin this December.

The 14 Day quarantine requirements were deemed by World Athletics not to be practical for a one-day event.

“The health and safety of the entire running community and the host region is at the forefront of this postponement,” said a statement from World Athletics.

The 11th edition of the Gay Games was due to be held in Asia for the first time this November.

The quarantine restrictions there on incoming visitors is even longer at 21 days. Organisers had hoped for 12,000 participants as well as 75,000 participants.

The Games have now been rescheduled to take place two years later on November 2023.

We can only hope as we head into Winter here that the vaccination programme will be sufficiently strong to prevent further surges and further disruption here in Ireland and Europe.
