Fans will return to the Curragh racecourse for the first time since the Covid lockdowns at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby this Saturday.

All available tickets sold out quickly when they were made available last week and there will be 1,000 spectators in the stands and around the racecourse for the big race.

A number of tickets were held back for residents of Kildare who had been invited to put their names forward as well.

The race is one of the most prestigious in Europe and will be broadcast on RTÉ racing and across the UK on ITV.

This is a special year being the 40th anniversary of Shergar’s win in the race and the 20th of Galileo’s recognised as two of the biggest stars in the sport over that period of time.

The trophy for this year’s race has been specially produced by Newbridge Silverware

The trophy centrepiece is a magnificent silver horse and rider which has been embellished with over 100 crystals, symbolising purity, strength and excellence. It is surrounded by a representation of the track layout, made from silver which has been meticulously crafted by hand by master craftsman, Lorcan Harney and mounted on an elliptical surround. Layers of silver were set onto the elliptical form for dramatic effect.

“We wanted to capture a sense of movement and by layering silver material, this allows the trophy to look different from each angle, representing the sense of horses in motion,” said Nora Ulrich, Chief Designer at Newbridge Silverware.

“The methods and processes we use to make our products have remained virtually unchanged for nearly 90 years,” added CEO William Doyle.

“This piece was designed and handmade by our team in the factory and we are delighted to be part of the legacy of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.”

“We are delighted that Dubai Duty Free are supporting Newbridge Silverware using their very talented Irish based designers and local production team to produce spectacular trophies for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby this year,” added Curragh Racecourse CEO pat Keogh.

Join us tomorrow when we’ll be taking a look through the history on display at the Racing Legends Museum in Kildare Town for this week and next.
