In the World Cup of 1999 a US player called Brandi Chastain brought the women’s game to a worldwide audience by scoring the winning penalty and then whipping off her shirt to celebrate.
It created an iconic image that went around the world and summed up the new power that Women’s sport had gathered up in that one tournament.
Now it is a part of Nike’s TV ad around the 2023 World Cup and it is, as you might expect a classic.
During that final ABC Sport commentator said “What we are seeing clearly transcends sports. This is a moment in American culture … embracing women athletes in this magnitude. And the athletes themselves realize they are part of something special.”
Yes it took another 22 years to finally achieve equal pay, and yes it is a journey that still has a long way to run but Women’s sport has crossed a rubicon and it is inevitable that the period from now to the future, which echoes that from then to now will see a massive closing of the gap.
And it is important along the way to remember the moments of the past as well as celebrate the stars of the now.
We have naturally been over indexed on our recognition and celebration of the Republic of Ireland team but this tournament will still have three weeks to entertain and amaze us after Ireland’s final game next Monday.
If you haven’t been convinced of that, let today’s Daily Video fire up your senses.
Oh, and one interesting fact about the Chastain penalty. She was naturally right footed and played that way but when it came to penalty kicks in practice, her coaches recognised that she was more accurate with her left foot.
The winning penalty was a left footed scorcher into the top corner of the net. In her cameo appearance within the ad watch which foot she kicks the ball with as a 55-year old now.
It changed the history of the sport. If China had won that Final who knows what the trajectory of equality in the sport might have been.
The Nike ad plays on a Dad who knocked himself out celebrating that goal with his daughter and wakes up 24 years later for this year’s World Cup.
This master ad is a greatest hits and we’ll bring different cut outs from it over the next couple of weeks, just to keep the fires burning.
