Dundalk FC has had a torrid season on and off the pitch but as they eased clear of a relegation threat they were also negotiating a change of ownership.
Peak 6 were unpopular with the fans but they were unapologetic in asserting what had been achieved.
“During PEAK6’s tenure, the club won two SSE Airtricity League of Ireland titles, two FAI Cups, two FAI President’s Cups, the Unite the Union Champions Cup and also made history by becoming the first Irish club to qualify for the group stages of the UEFA Europa League on two occasions,” read a club statement announcing their exit.
“During our tenure, we had the opportunity to get to know the town, the club, and most importantly, the passion that local fans have for the club.
“That’s why we’re so pleased to have found a group of buyers who have local ties and a deep-rooted history with Dundalk FC. I have no doubt they will continue to support the success of the club going forward, and we will continue rooting for the club’s success right alongside the fans.”
The new owners are a local consortium of former owner Andy Connolly and his brother Martin as well as the team behind StatSports which is based just north of the town.
They will be unveiling an initial look at their plans for the club next week in advance of the next home fixture against Derry City.
The initial reaction from fans has been positive. Leading trade union figure Brendan Ogle was involved in a fan grouping that had called for the departure of PEAK 6. He welcomed the change as a “new era” for the club.
There are suggestions that an element of fan ownership will be introduced, hoping to capture the essence of the Bohemian FC ownership model that has served them well through the last 20 months making sure of an alignment between the club and the community.
