Eight boats will compete under the Irish flag in the European Rowing Championships which take place in Varese, Italy, this weekend.
Reigning European Champion Sanita Puspure will not be among them though as she has elected to stay at home and continue her Tokyo preparations on home water.
In her absence the spotlight will be on Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy, racing competitively together for the first time since winning Gold at the World Rowing Championships in 2019.
Paul’s brother Gary will also be in action, in the Men’s lightweight single sculls.
Currently, four Irish boats have qualified for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The Women’s single qualified by Sanita Puspure, the Women’s Pair qualified by Aileen Crowley and Monika Dukarska, the Men’s Lightweight Double qualified by Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy and the Men’s Double qualified by Philip Doyle and Ronan Byrne.
The Women’s Four and the Women’s Lightweight Double are also hoping to qualify and will have their chance at the Olympic qualifier in Lucerne from 15-17 May.
Two boats are competing in these categories at the European Championships as well.
There will be a live race tracker for all races on the World rowing website.
