On Friday we enter what could prove to be a brave new world when the new streaming service covering all but a handful of games in the SSE Airtricity League goes live.

Watch LOI is a construct between the FAI, RTÉ Sport and GAAGo which will enable fans to buy a season pass in Ireland for €55, overseas for €69 or game by game for €5.

RTÉ will produce the coverage with top-flight commentators including George Hamilton and John Kenny behind the microphone and multi-camera positions in each of the grounds.

The streaming and customer management side will be handled by the same joint venture vehicle that produces GAA Go and was established with real foresight by RTÉ and the GAA back in 2014.

It’s a ready-made solution, wholly Irish owned and managed and it could yet prove to be a marker for how sports coverage is brought to the widest possible audience at an affordable cost in the long term.

Sport for Business sat down with the Group Head of Sport at RTÉ Declan McBennett to explore the deal and where its origins were, the level of service we can look forward to, what it has been like filling the schedule in the year that promised so much and delivered so little, and more.

It is well worth making a cup of coffee and sitting back to hear the full interview.
