predict-conference

Sport for Business will be looking at the world of sports analytics at the predict Conference taking place today in the RDS.

Rob Hartnett will be joined for a lunchtime panel discussion with Ray Boyne, Head of Analysis with Dublin GAA fresh from playing his part in Saturday’s All Ireland triumph; Debbie Byrne of Lifestyle Sports who will be sharing insight into how Ireland’s largest sporting retailer makes decisions based on data; and Donal Marah on how the GAA identified statistics as a sponsorship opportunity and brought Sure on board in 2016 to brand delivery of the numbers to a TV and wider audience.

The ways in which data relates to sport are many and varied.  Because of its appeal to such a wide cross section of the general population and the business community it also proves a remarkably straightforward demonstration of how complex raw data can be turned into outputs that show a different perspective on a familiar story.

While Ireland and Europe have not reached the same level of statistical heaven as US sport there is a growing trend towards it.  Analysis of Stephen Cluxton’s kick outs formed a major plan of media previews through the All Ireland season while we now know more about how many times that Leinster backs have broken the gain line than ever before.

This is one of the key areas we will be exploring today and we will bring you some of the highlights from the discussion in tomorrow’s Daily News digest.
