The FAI has called an Extraordinary General Meeting to be held on March 28th where members will be asked to extend the term of office of the current interim board and to approve a number of changes to the Constitution of the Association.
The Association last held an EGM at the end of August last year when the crucial vote was held on approving the rescue package that saved the Association from insolvency.
At that meeting the term of the interim board was extended to the end of March 2021, hence the timing of this meeting to approve another extension.
It is a practical technical step needed in the ever-changing circumstances of football in Covid. There will be better times to constitute a permanent board and to change now at short notice with so many elements in the mix that are outside of its control would be potentially very damaging.
Due to ongoing Level Five restrictions the EGM will be held online, as it was last August.
A series of information sessions will take place in advance of the meeting to explain in detail what is being sought as part of ongoing governance reforms.
Among the other items to be put before the meeting are changes to the Constitution of the FAI, approve of regulations and the appointment of members to the Electoral Committee and the Electoral Appeals Committee.
It has been a busy period for new CEO Jonathan Hill after meeting with the media last week, with SSE Airtricity League clubs earlier in the week and with commercial partners this morning.
Decisions on whether Dublin will retain the hosting of four games in the Euro 2020 Championships are ongoing while the news also broke this week of Government backing in Dublin and Westminster for a joint bid to stage the 2030 FIFA Men’s World Cup Finals.
The EGM will take place hot on the heels of the Republic of Ireland’s opening games in the 2022 World Cup Qualifying group away to Serbia the Wednesday before and at home to Luxembourg on the Saturday of that weekend.
