Rea Walshe, Mark Russell, Mark Scanlon and Ger McDermott have been appointed to four key roles within the FAI’s new Senior Leadership team after an internal recruitment process.

Rea Walshe has been reappointed to the role of Chief Operations Officer.

Mark Russell moves from Commercial Director to the new expanded position of Commercial and Marketing Director.

Mark Scanlon is the new League of Ireland Director and moves from his current job as National Co-ordinator for Schools and Third Level Football.

Ger McDermott is the new Head of Grassroots having previously served as Club and League Development Manager.

They join Ruud Dokter as Football and High Performance Director; Stephen Kenny as International Football Director; Alex O’Connell as Finance Director and Barry Gleeson as International Operations Director.

There was internal competition for each of the positions but the process saw these emerge as winners and the appointments have been ratified by the interim Board.

The recruitment process for the role of CEO has now passed the original closing date and the recruitment consultants and a nominations committee of the Board are understood to be assessing them at the moment.

This will be a key appointment and may need the patience of a sphinx and the skills of a Liam Brady cross field pass to unlock the knots of dissatisfaction that  are tightening across various elements of the ‘football family’.

There had been speculation that Niall Quinn might have applied for one or more of the roles but he remains in place as the interim Deputy CEO to Gary Owens.

Whether such a role will persist after the main job is filled is one of the many moving parts yet to settle.
