It’s International Week in football, once the transfer deadline obsession passes this evening, but the FAI has been in the news for non-footballing reasons in the past few days.

Mason, Hayes and Curran against Hayes Solicitors is not usually a fixture to make the sports pages, but so it was on Sunday as both Sport for Business members were said to be lining up on either side of a filing on behalf of Eileen Gleeson against the Association.

News reporter Mark Tighe, who was the main driver of the John Delaney story in his previous employment at the Sunday Times, has switched to The Sunday Independent now, but continues to make a mark with football stories.

He had full access to the papers, which contain allegations of wrongdoing against both the manager and the Republic of Ireland Women’s team, particularly in comparison to the Men’s team.

The Association have said they will robustly defend themselves against the allegations, so we will leave it there for now, as Bill O’Herlihy might have said in gentler times.

In better news, it has also emerged that John Martin, a regular Sport for Business guest in his time at Shamrock Rovers, appears to be in pole position to become the new Director of Football at the FAI.

The Republic of Ireland Men’s team face Hungary at the Aviva on Saturday before travelling to Armenia next Tuesday.

Northern Ireland starts the campaign with two away matches, against Luxembourg and Germany this coming Thursday and Sunday.
