More than 2,000 competitors from 30 countries around the world will converge on Citywest in Dublin next month for the GAA Handball World Championships.
A purpose built arena with 21 courts is being constructed at the venue which will enable 5,000 spectators a day to watch the action.  World titles will be determined in age groups ranging from under 11 to over 80.
I was billed at the launch of the event yesterday in Croke Park as the most spectacular showpiece occasion in the sport’s history.
Reigning World Handball Champions, Paul Brady and Fiona Shannon, are bidding for four successive world titles in a 9 year period and Brady is relishing this latest challenge “this is without doubt the best world handball event ever. The fact we will have 2,000 players playing in 21 courts in an arena where 5,000 spectators per day will be present is massive for the game. I cannot wait to begin my title defence and there is no doubt that the Citywest is the place to be this October”.
“It is fantastic to see one of our family of games make such giant strides in world sport and the growth of the one wall code of handball has very much been a major reason for that. GAA Handball is a sport which originated in the GAA and is is now growing rapidly in countries around the world said GAA President, Liam O’Neill.
The Championships are supported by Discover Ireland and have a dedicated website to find out more at www.worldhandball2012.com. The action will take place over ten days starting on October 11th.
