It may have been a day after the St Patrick’s Day parades but Leighlinbridge was out in force yesterday for the homecoming for Willie Mullins and his star chaser Gaelic Warrior, winner of the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup last week.
Fresh from top-level success, Gaelic Warrior was welcomed back to Mullins’ Closutton yard in County Carlow, where owners, stable staff and racing fans came together to mark the achievement. The eight-year-old has developed into one of the most exciting horses in training, delivering a victory seen by many as one of the strongest in recent years.
Stablemate Galopin Des Champs captured racing hearts in his bid to become the first Irish chaser since Arkle to win three gold cups in a row. Now that mantle passes to Gaelic Warrior to try again.
Mullins, already one of the most decorated trainers in jumps racing history, has enjoyed another exceptional campaign, with Gaelic Warrior among the headline acts. Lossiemouth and L’Etait Temps winners of the Champion Hurdle and the Champion Chase were also in the party.
Speaking at the event, Mullins praised the horse’s progression and temperament, highlighting how he has matured into a top-class chaser over the past season. Connections have long regarded Gaelic Warrior as a horse of significant potential, and this has confirmed that promise on the biggest stages.
Gaelic Warrior’s blend of speed, jumping ability and versatility has made him a fan favourite, and his victories have been central to Mullins’ strong run in major festivals. The homecoming offered an opportunity not only to celebrate recent success but also to look ahead to what could be an even bigger future.
Attention will now turn to the remainder of the season, to Fairyhouse at Easter and Punchestown at the end of April, with further targets likely to be considered as Mullins continues his pursuit of leading trainer honours. With competition from rivals such as current leader in the Trainers Championship, Gordon Elliott, every high-value win will be hard fought.
