Galopin Des Champs galloped into the history books at Cheltenham winning the Centenary of the biggest race in jumping and becoming only the eighth horse in history to defend his crown.
He is trainer Willie Mullins’ record-breaking 103rd winner at the Cheltenham Festival, and Paul Townend’s fourth winner of the race putting him on the same mark as Pat Taaffe as the most successful of all time in the race.
He could well be in line for the same again next year to echo Best Mate’s achievement as the only three-time winner in the modern era, Arkle being the previous back in the 1960s.
Willie Mullins has trained nine winners this year, more than the entire massed ranks of British trainers and it has been another scintillating week for the sport in Ireland.
The three major Championship races were all won by Irish-trained horses, it hardly gets much better than that.
