Galway GAA’s bringing on board new Sponsor Supermacs for the county football jersey has also generated a first of a kind ‘scrap page scheme’ for fans wanting to wear the new shirt.
On March 24th fans who attend the National Football league game against Wexford can bring their old shirts and availa of up to a €20 discount on the purchase of a new one.
The old shirts will then be recycled and sent to clothe children in Zambia as part of the Alan Kerins Project headed by the former Galway footballer.
One of the biggest challenges face by a new sponsor in present times is the longer life span of old shirts.  This was notable in Dublin’s All Ireland winning year of 2011 when many of the photographs of fans celebrating showed off Arnotts as opposed to Vodafone branded shirts.
Galway and Supermac’s are obviously hoping to speed up the transition, perhaps showing confidence that their own team will make a breakthrough in 2013 as well.
The sponsorship deal announced last month brought the Galway hurlers and footballers under the same shirt for the first time. It is understood to be worth a little over €120,000 a year to the Galway County Board.
